A medical alert bracelet for the uninsured American, as a work of visual art, it is also a social reflection, which challenges our cultural constructs, our values, and our behavior. Ubiquitous now in American culture, wristbands have become vehicles for social or political expression, and are commonly worn to show public support for causes such as finding a cure for breast cancer or leukemia. The design of these wristbands, challenges this popular means of social expression and examines it critically, leveraging irony for social commentary: awareness bracelets, which today are worn widely in support of cures, may achieve solidarity and support and eventually lead to cures, though, once obtained, cures may only be afforded by those who can afford health insurance.
